How to add a Gmail account

Follow these instructions to add your Gmail account to either your individual or team workspace in Front. A Gmail account is an email account that you and/or your team can log into using a password.

Helpful information before you get started

  • Front will give you the option to import 50k of your most recent email messages if you choose to. See Step 5 of the instructions below for this option, and you can find more on Gmail import behavior here.
  • Front has 2-way sync with Gmail accounts. More Gmail sync behavior here and exceptions here.
  • All Gmail labels will be converted into tags and applied to the conversation. The tags will be private or public depending on which workspace the Gmail account is added to.
  • By default, any Gmail account that is added to Front will have their threading mode set to Gmail. This will allow for a full two-way Gmail sync for all inbound and outbound email, open/archived status, and tagging. If you change the threading mode to any other option, the status of messages and tags will not be synced.

How to prepare your inbox before adding it to Front

To ensure your transition to Front goes smoothly, prepare your inbox using the following best practices before you add your Gmail account to Front.

  • For emails that still need to be worked on - create a unique Gmail label and apply it to all the emails you want to keep track of.
  • Depending on the workspace you connect your Gmail account, follow these instructions after you've gone through the configuration steps in the next section:
    • Connecting Gmail account to your individual workspace:
      • Go into your Settings > My Inboxes > User Mailbox setting to archive All Mail before the current date.
      • Once you’ve archived your entire inbox, simply navigate back to your Inbox and click into the search bar and use the tag modifier `tag:` to search for all email conversations that have your unique Gmail label on it.
      • Select all and unarchive those conversations.
    • Connecting Gmail account to your team workspace:
      • All emails will be automatically archived by default.
      • Simply navigate to your Inbox and click into the search bar and use the tag modifier, tag:, to search for all email conversations that have your unique Gmail label on it.
      • Select all and unarchive those conversations.

Step 1

Click the gear icon on the top right of Front and into the Company or Personal settings tab, depending on which space you are working with. Admins can also access user settings by following these steps.

Step 2

Click on Inboxes on the left menu and Add an individual inbox or Add a team inbox, depending on which space you're in. Fill out the name and description of your inbox and click Create.

Step 3

Choose Google from the channel menu, then select Gmail Account, and click Continue.

Step 4

Click the blue Sign in with Google button to authenticate with your credentials. Front requires full Read and Write access to Gmail accounts. Click Allow to grant Front these permissions. For reference, these are the permissions that Gmail lists:

  • Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email in Gmail
  • View and manage the provisioning of calendar resources on your domain
  • See, edit, share, and permanently delete all the calendars you can access using Google Calendar

Note: Though the first permission states that Front needs permission to permanently delete your email in Gmail, Front actually does not have access to and will not permanently delete your emails in Gmail. Front is only able to permanently delete from our own servers. Learn more about how Front permanently deletes here.

Step 5

You will see a screen titled Import.

Here, you can:

  • Choose to import all historical conversations or not to. All imported conversations will be archived by default.
  • Choose to import and sync all folders or labels or not to.

If you do not wish to import these items, turn the toggles off so they appear greyed out.

Step 6 (for team inbox)

Choose the teammate access for this inbox, and whether you'd like to pin this inbox for teammates.

Step 7

Complete the remainder of the inbox settings, and click Finish.

I'm receiving an "admin_policy_enforced" error, what do I do?

This means that your Google Workspace App Access Control settings are restricted in a way that prevents Front from properly accessing your accounts.  Google documents these settings here:

There are two primary ways to fix this error which require access to your Google Workspace Admin Console.  Start by going to your Admin settings, then select Security, then App access control.

The first way is to remove restrictions on all Google Services:

Start by clicking Manage Google Services, then select all services and then click Change access. Select Unrestricted and then Change.

Alternatively, you can add Front as a Trusted app, giving access to all services:

From App access control, click on Manage third-party app access. Click Configure a new app then OAuth App Name or Client ID

Search for Front or the ID 754490832836, then Select the Front app from the list. Check the boxes for the OAuth Client ID and click Select

For App Access, select Trusted: Can access all Google services and finally Configure.

All plans have access to this feature.

  • Hey - Front is not recognising my new gmail account. Does it take some time to be able to detect it as gmail?

  • Adam,

No, it shouldn't take any time. Can you email us and we'll take a look at your account?

  • It'd be great to use front app individual inbox to manage my personal email. My company uses gmail. But the problem is that when I set up an individual inbox in front app, it throws everything together and doesn't separate primary from updates, promotions, etc. is there a way to mange only my primary or separate these inboxed when I manage in front?

  • Joe Lemay Hi there,

You could create rules to automatically add tags to the different types of emails. And you can make those tags noticeable in the second pane, so that you can quickly look over promotions. We're also getting ready to work on something called custom views, that will make this workflow even easier. Stay tuned for that announcement.

  • Thanks for the section on "admin_policy_enforced" but the recommended actions don't match the Google Admin interface... at least for the business Google Suite. Is there perhaps a way to add Domain-wide Delegation for Front?

  • Elph Morgan I've updated that section of our documentation to more correctly reflect the settings in API controls.  Unfortunately, we're not able to support Domain-wide Delegation at this time.
