Read vs. unread status
Mark as read vs. archive
Archiving instead of marking emails as read is the Front-recommended way to manage your inbox. Once no immediate action is required on a message, simply click on the Archive icon at the top of the conversation. This way, you'll be able to focus on only seeing the conversations that need your attention, rather than having to look through a long list of both read and unread conversations.
Conversations will automatically unarchive and appear in your Inbox when there's a new message or comment. For more information on archiving, see How to archive a conversation.
Read/Unread counters
By default, your individual inbox counters (the number next to Inbox in your the Me section of your sidebar) are set to represent the number of open conversations. This is because we generally recommend an archiving workflow instead of marking your conversations as read.
However, you can switch your individual inbox counters to represent the number of Unread messages. For instructions, see How to change your individual inbox counters.
Mark conversations as read or unread
Mark individual messages read or unread
Although we recommend using the archiving method above, you can still mark messages as read or unread in Front.
Marking a conversation as read or unread applies only to you. This means that if you've marked a conversation as read, it will appear as read in your view, but your teammates will still see the conversation as unread.
Unread messages in Front have a blue dot to the left of the message.
Once you've read a message in Front, the blue dot disappears. A conversation is marked as read once you've selected the conversation and read it, or by clicking the blue dot to the left of an unread message.
To mark as unread, hover over the left of the conversation, and a blue dot will appear. Click the dot to mark the conversation as unread.
Mark multiple messages read or unread
Select the messages you wish to change mark read or unread by holding the Shift key and using your down arrow on the conversation list. Once selected, click More from the conversation view, and click Mark as unread or Mark as read.
Filter for unread messages
To filter an inbox by unread messages, click the search bar, then use the advanced search filter is:unread to refine your search to unread messages only.
Note on Gmail inboxes:
For individual inboxes set up via Gmail, reading a message in Front will mark it as read in Gmail.
For shared inboxes set up via Gmail, messages are marked as read in Gmail only when they are assigned to a teammate in Front.

Rolf Dröge Not at this time, but it's on our roadmap!
-
Cori Morris thanks. Really Love the product
-
Yes, would like to know if more than one message can be marked as read, recently imported messages and would like to mark them all as read.
-
Please advise how to mark multiple emails as "read" and or delete multiple emails.
-
Good afternoon, any update on selecting multiple emails at a time to mark as read?
-
Hi christina martin ! Our team is still working on this feature. I'll be sure to follow up here to let you know when we do have an update for everyone. Thanks!
-
Kenji Hayward THANK YOU
-
Sorry if I have missed this somewhere but how can I get an inbox or tag box to un bold? I have read the item sitting in there but it's still bolded, any ideas would be great! Thanks
-
Its likely bold because even if nothing in the actual inbox but there are items in the archive, they are not marked "read". It is my understanding that being able to mark multiple messages as read all in one time is still in the production for Front.
-
Thanks so much, Christina, yes we are still working on that feature. Melanie Brown feel free to email us if that is still an issue support@frontapp.com and our team is happy to look into it.
-
christina martin thank you but that isn't the issue, everything in that inbox archived, trash all areas are opened and read emails yet it is still bold and showing a bold #1 next to it, it's quite frustrating as it looks like there are un actioned emails.
-
Kenji Hayward it is still an issue, I went through all areas and there is nothing unread, it's still bolded.
-
Melanie Brown Hey Melanie, we see that the "JRKool Electrical" tag from your screenshot was already deleted. If it still appears bold (or other tags that appear incorrectly bolded), can you please send an email to support@frontapp.com with more screenshots so that we can further investigate? Happy to help!
-
Lemuel Chan oh I didn’t delete the screen shot but ok no worries I’ll send an email, thanks!!
-
Does a bolded tag mean that there are unread messages in the folder?
-
Unread or Open messages depending on your inbox counter preference.
-
I have some Inboxes/Tags that are bold, yet I do not have unread or open messages...is this a bug?
-
Hi Kristin, we can assist with this! Please email us at support@frontapp.com.

Why is archive vs unread the recommended way to handle processed email? Archive is creating some friction to our organization's ability to adopt Front, because we were using read vs. unread. If there is a great reason behind archiving I can bring that back to the team. For us "read" vs. "unread" has been preferred because it allows us to see old email while processing newer email.
-
Justin Boogaard Hi there, in Front, "read" vs. "unread" is a status that applies only to you. If you mark a conversation as read, your teammate may still see it as unread. With archiving, the status syncs for all teammates, so you'll be able to focus on the conversations that need attention, rather than having to look through a long list of both read and unread conversations.
